De Vries Surname Meaning

Dutch: ethnic name for someone from Friesland formed with the definite article de and thus meaning ‘the Frisian’. This is one of the most common surnames in the Netherlands.

It was assumed under the French government of Napoleon in 1811 by many inhabitants of Friesland and also by many (Ashkenazic) Jews.
